Winter has included more snow and less rain so far

More snow and less rain.

That’s the kind of winter it’s been so far in the region.

Environment Canada Warning Preparedness Meteorologist Monica Vaswani says during an average winter our region will see an average snowfall of 49.6 centimetres in December along with an average rainfall of 34.7 millimetres of rain for the month.

Last month, 54.6 centimetres of snow fell across the area along with 13.5 millimetres of rain.

Vaswani tells Moose FM that weather patterns moving in from Alberta, mixed with cooler weather, produced what we saw weather-wise to finish off 2025.

“Our temperatures were actually, on average, about four degrees below normal so that also helped keep the precipitation in the form of snow as opposed to rain.”

When it comes to the rest of the winter, Vaswani says it’s difficult to look too far ahead with accuracy but she says it will be warmer this week ahead of the temperature dropping next week.
