KDH CEO says investigation into what led to code grey underway

The chief executive officer of Kemptville District Hospital says if there’s a silver lining to the code grey called earlier it’s week it’s that they will be better prepared next time.

Frank Vassallo says two power bumps that impacted the hospital on Tuesday afternoon resulted in the hospital’s cellular service, internet, and electronic health record system being knocked offline and caused a lot of disruption.

Downtime and back-up systems were also impacted.

Vassallo says that resulted in a code grey, signifying an infrastructure failure, being called which stayed in effect until 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Hospital staff reverted to paper systems to care for patients.

Vassallo tells the Vista Radio Newsroom that work is underway to determine what happened.

“We’re still at it and won’t stop until we uncover all the root causes and are satisfied with process improvements, if the (if they?) need to be made, or any other mitigations that we need to have in place.”

Vassallo says the emergency department remained open during the code grey with more than 60 people at the emergency department over the course of the day.
