Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week

Carbon Monoxide Awareness week in Ontario runs from November 1st to 7th.

Prescott Fire Department suggests having all fuel-burning appliances inspected annually in order to prevent carbon monoxide leaks in your home. Chief Fire Prevention Officer Brent Norton says more than 65% of injuries and deaths from CO occur in the home. You should have carbon monoxide detectors if you have any fuel burning appliances. These include furnaces, hot water heaters, gas or wood fireplaces, portable fuel-burning heaters and generators, barbecues, stoves and vehicles.

Norton says never take chances when it comes to carbon monoxide. If your alarm is sounding, immediately leave the building but keep all doors and windows closed so firefighters can detect the source. He adds that the effects of carbon monoxide poisoning can be devastating but proper alarm maintenance helps with prevention.

Exposure to carbon monoxide can cause flu-like symptoms such like headaches and nausea, as wel las confusion, drowsiness, loss of conscious and death. To find a registered contractor near you go to www.cosafety.ca.
