Flu season is approaching quickly and flu shot clinics are starting to pop up.
The flu shot is free and health unit Medical Officer of Health Dr. Paula Stewart encourages the public to take the precaution for a number of reasons. She points out that the flu can last weeks and can be even worse for some groups, like pregnant women or people with respiratory illnesses. Getting the flu shot is also beneficial because if you do still catch the disease it won’t be as bad.
The Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit operate six immunization clinics in the region. All of the clinics have limited hours of operation and there are no walk-in appointments, all immunizations must be booked in advance.
Stewart warns that by looking at the year’s flu season in the Southern Hemisphere they can get a sense what the Northern Hemisphere’s season may look like and this year Australia saw a lot of people sick with the flu.
