MP Barrett says incident at CFB Wainright is a devastating tragedy

Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes MP Michael Barrett says the deaths of four soldiers at CFB Wainright Alberta is a devastating tragedy.

Barrett, vice-chair of the veterans affairs committee, who served in the Canadian Armed Forces, says his heart breaks for the families of those killed and the 39 injured in Saturday’s wildfire at the military base.

While serving, Barrett says he was posted to the headquarter unit which supported the unit whose members were involved in the incident last weekend.

He adds it underscores the risk that CAF members take every day.

Barrett tells the Vista Radio Newsroom that Remembrance Day will resonate even stronger this year.

“With four new names added to those lists of the fallen I think that it will sharpen the focus of some.”

Officials say the investigation into what happened continues and the findings will be made public.
