Kemptville’s first women’s tackle football team getting ready to start season

Kemptville’s first women’s tackle football team is getting ready to take the field.

The Kemptville Jaguars are a new expansion team in the U19 Ontario Women’s Football League and have their first game on May 29 at Kemptville Campus.

Jaguars Director Tanya McKechnie says the OWFL added teams in four new regions for this season but Kemptville is the only one to be able to pull together a 16-member roster in time to play for the 2026 campaign.

She says most of the players started from scratch, having never played the sport before, and she adds that they have made incredible process since they started practicing in January.

McKechnie tells Moose FM that the team is a game changer in the community.

“This is just fantastic for women in sports especially when you look at football which is traditionally a very male oriented sport.”

The team will play six regular season games plus playoffs and the league is made up of 15 teams.
