Sports in the 1970’s the topic of upcoming event at Spencerville Mill

An upcoming event at the Spencerville Mill and Museum is shining the spotlight on the history of sport in the 1970’s.

Carleton University professor and author Matthew Bellamy will lead a discussion on Tuesday at the mill on a decade he says was a transformative period that impacted culture in general.

Bellamy says one of the main themes was athletes like Muhammad Ali, John McEnroe and Guy Lafleur enjoying excesses away from their respective sports while still being able to perform.

He tells Moose FM that the party lifestyle that many athletes enjoyed hasn’t made its way into sports today for a few reasons.

“The money that’s involved. To get that kind of cash I think that you have to be at your best.”

The event is free to attend with the doors opening at 5:30 and the talk starting at 6 p.m.
