Mayor Peckford Thankful For Funding From Province’s Safe Restart Agreement

The Mayor of North Grenville is praising the province following yesterday’s announcement that the community would be receiving nearly a million dollars.

On Wednesday, the Ontario government announced $695 million for financial relief to municipalities as part of the Safe Restart Agreement, with $987,000 going to North Grenville.

Following the announcement Mayor Nancy Peckford shared her excitement, tipping her hat to MPP for Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes Steve Clark – who was vital in ensuring the municipality was taken care of.

“The municipalities have been among the hardest hit and it’s just crucial that communities like ours are able to do what it can to continue to invest in people and infrastructure as we get through this COVID-period,” Peckford said.

The Mayor says the municipality decided to apply for the funding in order to document its recent lost revenue, caused by the pandemic.

She feels the funding should help the community recoup some of those losses.

“Especially when it came to the Municipal Centre,” Peckford said. “We weren’t renting ice, we weren’t renting community rooms and that did reflect lost revenue for the municipality in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. We also highlighted the municipality and Kemptville Campus’s contribution to our COVID-assessment Centre.”

Peckford says the municipality was extremely fortunate the province recognized the loss incurred by the municipality and compensated it for it’s recent financial woes.
