Grenville County OPP is reminding homeowners to protect themselves against fraud.
Often a scammer will contact you before you contact them, according to the OPP. They may claim they are an investor and will sometimes deliver a note to your mail box or door. The goal is to get your property for a very low price, sometimes as little as 65% of market value, according to the OPP.
Homeowners can protect themselves from being victimized by never rushing into a deal, asking for references, getting multiple written estimates and having a lawyer look over any proposed contract.
The OPP says if a deal sounds too good to be true, it often is. When in doubt, people can contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
