Single mother chosen for Habitat home

Two families were selected for the Habitat for Humanity Thousand Islands build in Lansdowne. The duplex, located on King Street, is set to be completed by May 1. Marsha Murray, single mother of two boys, is one of the successful applicants. The family is currently renting in Gananoque, following a separation.

Murray says it’s been a rough go. She says finding a place to live in the area has been difficult and she didn’t want her sons to switch schools.

Murrary says it’s been says her oldest son has autism and keeping his routine the same is very important. She says rent is very high and this will give them the chance to get back on their feet and start rebuilding.

The three-bedroom, two-story home will provide a fresh start for the family, according to Murray.

She says Habitat has made home ownership possible. Murray says it’s a zero down, zero percent mortgage. She says volunteering with Habitat, known as sweat equity, is considered the down payment. The mortgage is geared towards your income, Murray explained. She says it’s a hand-up not a hand-out.
