St. Mike’s raises over $22,000 for orphanage since 2013

St. Michael Catholic High School has donated $22,275 to the Ogooma Uganda Children’s Home since 2013. Casual days during Lent bring in dollars for the orphanage in Africa. Students contribute $2 each to participate.

The initiative started after teacher Sheri Richer-Camillone first visited the home seven years ago. She started doing presentations about Ogooma to spread the word.

She says she saw the most beautiful part of humanity at the orphanage. Richer-Camillone says among people who have so little, she encountered incredible generosity.

The Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario has raised a total of $30,000 for Ogooma, with the bulk of the dollars coming from St. Mike’s.

The money has been used for things like a new kitchen, latrine pits for both girls and boys, a new classroom and books.

Organizer Kristi Johnston Bates says during Lent, students feel like they’re expected to give something up, but Lent is also about giving more.
