It’s true.  We’re only gifted the set of eyes with which we are born. With everything presented to us daily… meeting people, seeing landscapes, following movements of traffic, reading documents… we may take our sight for granted. Especially with today’s use of screens for everything from entertainment to education in schools. Screen time almost seems constant.

At a young age, our eyes are vital to our development and learning.  At any age, having your eyes checked is a good plan for future success.  Your child should meet an Optometrist, like Dr. Carla Eamon.

Early detection

80% of all learning is visual*. If the information being presented to a child is not processed properly it could lead to frustration and acting out.  But since reports show 25% of school age children have a vision problem**, and 5% to 10% of preschool children have an undetected vision problem***, early detection can help improve their situation.

As it turns out, approximately 60% of children with literacy problems have an undiagnosed vision problem****.  Even, Uncorrected amblyopia may harm school performance, ability to learn, and later, adult self-image. Furthermore, uncorrected amblyopia may be a risk factor for future total blindness.*****

It’s time to bring your child’s learning into Focus.

Nothing feels as good as home. That’s why we’re building the new Dundas Manor https://www.mykemptvillenow.com/49391/local-connections/nothing-feels-as-good-as-home-thats-why-were-building-the-new-dundas-manor/ Wed, 14 Jun 2023 04:01:18 +0000 https://www.mykemptvillenow.com/?p=49391

For 45 years, the Dundas Manor Long-Term Care Home in Winchester has helped to keep families together - even though they are living apart due to health challenges. It is the only long-term care home in Dundas County and is an essential part of our local healthcare system. Now, it’s time for a new Dundas Manor.

Magic happens at Dundas Manor every day. With your help, the magic will continue in a brand-new home.

Dundas Manor inspires happiness and joy. But our building does not.

Dundas Manor is a place of joy and happiness, jokes, prayers, and peace. It is filled with activities, books, exercise, music, and balloon fights. Life at Dundas Manor is all about living – with care and compassion. From venturing out to local fairs to a toe-tapping fiddler in the living room, there is always something happening.

Today, Dundas Manor is warm and cozy – but also crowded and dated. It was built in 1978 for 60 residents. While 38 beds were added over the years, no other areas were expanded. The dining space is so limited that some residents literally eat their meals in the hallway. Staff members work in offices that used to be closets. Two people can barely pass by one another in the narrow hallways. The building is deteriorating. It’s time for a brand new, larger, safe, and comfortable home.

The new Dundas Manor will have four resident home areas, called Homesteads. Each one will have a wonderful gathering space as well as beautiful outdoor gardens nearby. Hallway dining will be a thing of the past as there will be four large, bright dining rooms with enough space for everyone. Rooms in the new home will have only one or two residents – and everyone will have a window.

Current and future residents – and our local communities – rely on Dundas Manor to provide 24/7 care, 365 days a year. We are ready to keep caring for them in a new, safe Dundas Manor. They deserve nothing less.

We’re on our way. Join the dream!

We are a community that looks out for each other. We push cars out of snowbanks in the winter. Lend a hand fixing a lawn mower. Buy coffee for the person in line behind us. Offer support in times of need. Coming together to build the new Dundas Manor is no different.

https://youtu.be/95ZryS4fKAs

The estimated cost of the new building is $63 million. The provincial government is providing approximately $45 million. Our campaign goal is $18 million. And we’re well on our way! To date, more than $11.1 million has been donated by our generous community.

Can you help? There are many ways you can give to turn this dream into a reality. There are also many ways that you can be recognized for your generous gift.

For all the details, please visit www.dundasmanordream.ca or contact the WDMH Foundation team at 613-774-2422 ext. 6162 or 6169. Please join us and help build the new Dundas Manor. Thank you!

Connecting to what matters in Brockville, Ontario https://www.mykemptvillenow.com/44835/local-connections/connecting-to-what-matters-in-brockville-ontario/ Mon, 07 Jun 2021 16:27:50 +0000 https://www.mykemptvillenow.com/?p=44835

Connecting to what matters in Brockville, Ontario

Tracy Typhair, Sales Assistant at Xplornet Authorized Dealer, 401 Connect has been there from the beginning.

Twenty years ago, she worked for a small Internet company called RipNet. When RipNet was purchased by Xplornet, she became an Xplornet employee, and then eight years ago when Xplornet’s Brockville office was closed, the building was purchased and transitioned into Authorized Xplornet Dealer 401 Connect.

Tracy was born and raised in Brockville and, and knows the community and its customers’ needs very well.

“I’m the jack of all trades. I do everything from scheduling to sales. 401 Connect is me, Melissa, who does inventory and our financial work and James, our expert installer,” she said.

Tracy said that she’s noticed that customers call 401 Connect again and again because they are so impressed by James.

“We have people who specifically request James. He goes even if it’s snowing or raining. The reliability of a hometown dealer is very important to our customers,” she said.

The day before we spoke with Tracy, three different people sent in positive reviews for James based on their technician visit and initial impression. Here’s what one customer had to say:

“Your technician at 401 Connect was very professional and competent. He knew what he was doing.”

All the members of the 401 Connect team live and work in Brockville, Ontario, a place that Tracy couldn’t be fonder of.

“My favourite part of living in Brockville is the beautiful St. Lawrence river. Brockville is very homey. I went out to BC for a while but came right back home,” she said.

Tracy loves speaking with their friendly rural customers.

“There are some customers that you want to sit and talk to for hours because they’re so friendly and nice,” she said.

401 Connect’s service area spans from as far west as Seeley’s Bay, as far North as Perth and as far East as Chesterville, Morrisburg area.

Normally, the team enjoys being out in the community at tradeshows, an activity that Tracy misses very much. Sadly, due to COVID-19, the team at 401 Connect couldn’t get into the community this past year like they usually do, but they have been busy addressing their community’s mounting Internet needs.

On the plus side, she’s noticed that with Xplornet’s increased upload speeds more families have been able to access work, schooland loved ones from home.

In fact, Xplornet has built over 100 new towers since the beginning of the year which are delivering our fastest speeds yet! With Xplore 50/10 UNLIMITED customers now have access to download speeds up to 50 Mbps, upload speeds up to 10 Mbps and truly unlimited data.

Learn how Xplornet’s fast and reliable internet services are giving employees from the GTA the option to work remotely with confidence

DOT Communications in Lindsay, Ontario have been serving the Kawartha Lakes area as Authorized Xplornet Dealers since 2018. “Customer service is a top priority. Our team of technicians are very well trained and focused on getting customers the best signal strength and the best service possible. We go out of our way to accommodate,” owner, Ingo Straat says.

DOT Communications takes pride in delivering Internet to every corner of their service area and when they say they go out of their way, they really mean it.

“It is not uncommon for our technicians to get to a job site by boat or all-terrain vehicle. We are problem solvers, and we find a way to get the job done. We have continued to service our water access clientele through the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020, and we will continue to provide this essential service through the 2021 cottage season,” DOT Communications Sales Manager, Jennifer Burnham said.

The team operated out of Ingo and Jennifer’s home in Woodville until they outgrew the space and opened their Kent Street West location in Lindsay last year.

Jennifer is thrilled to do business in Lindsay, a place where she says community members look out for each other.

“Being a smaller community, we’re tight knit. Whether it’s clients or neighbours you’re constantly running into people you know. We support each other’s businesses and it’s almost like a little family here in Kawartha Lakes,” she explained.

As you can imagine, community-oriented people appreciate having a local dealer.

“Our clients are pleased to hear that we are familiar with where they live, or are moving to, and take comfort in that. We can be confident in our service delivery area and what clients can expect from our service, for folks who like to shop local, it’s nice to build those rapports,” Jennifer said.

This has been a difficult year for many businesses that rely on storefronts and community events to succeed. The DOT Communications team can’t wait until things are a bit better so that they can participate in their favourite local events like Rib Fest and Boat Fest.

Jennifer says that COVID-19 meant a lot more people in the community looking for reliable Internet.

“There’s been a lot of urban transplant, folks from the GTA moving out this way or spending more time at the cottage. They want to be in the place where they feel the most comfortable, but in order to do that they need to access to a work VPN or Skype meetings and so allowing that connection is really a lifeline at this point,” she explained.

DOT Communications are determined to give back to their community. Next month, they are running an outdoor event where they are giving out free reusable grocery bags and collecting non-perishable food items for the Kawartha Food Bank.

For more information about this event, find DOT Communications on Facebook and for reliable Internet with speeds up to 50 Mbps and unlimited data call the team at DOT Communications at
1-833-368-2666.

Rockwood Forest Nurseries have been a pillar of the Kawartha Lakes area for the past 36 years.

The nursery in Cameron, Ontario grows trees, shrubs and perennials sold not only through their retail garden centre, but whole scale to homebuilders, landscapers, golf courses and more.

“We serve everyone from homeowners to commercial sites at all different budget levels. We have various price points for various budgets so people can get what they need,” explained the owner, Santosh Patel. Santosh lives at his family cottage in Fenelon Falls for the 6 months that Rockwood Forest Nurseries is open for business.

He loves the peace and quiet of rural Ontario, and the opportunity to give back to the community through employing locals, helping the environment by encouraging folks to plant trees and inspiring the next generation through their “little growers” program.

“While parents are looking for shrubs in our garden centre and farm, we plan to have little potting stations where the young grower would have experience potting, learn a little bit about the tree or shrub and then have a little specimen to go home with. They can then transplant it with their family when they get home,” Santosh said

Santosh couldn’t be more grateful for the support of the Kawartha Lakes community.

“The fact that my little business puts food on the table for 18 people is only possible with the support of local community members,” he said. Last year, Rockwood started their Shopify account to give customers another convenient way to meet all their gardening needs.

“We have been with the Xplornet family for over 9 years now. Without their Internet service, we wouldn’t be able to have that as another sales channel for my customers,” he said.

Supporting local businesses like Rockwood Forest Nurseries is Xplornet’s bread and butter. If you’re a local resident or business owner give Xplornet a call today at 1-866-282-6982 for information about Internet options near you.

Finding the Right Mortgage For You https://www.mykemptvillenow.com/35794/local-connections/finding-the-right-mortgage-for-you/ Mon, 21 Oct 2019 21:44:06 +0000 https://www.mykemptvillenow.com/?p=35794

Finding the Right Mortgage For You

When it comes to your home, you need a mortgage that works for YOU. Just like how not all homes are built the same – not all mortgages are either. Depending on where you are in life, what you’re looking for, and how it all comes together is unique to you. So when choosing a mortgage, here are quick tips before you think of purchasing another property or your first home:

  1. Don’t move your money around without a paper trail
  2. Don’t close credit accounts or apply for a new credit card
  3. Be aware of upfront costs when purchasing a home
  4. Don’t switch jobs or make another big purchase
  5. Knowing how much equity you have in your current home can help you with a future purchase

Your home is a big investment. As a Mortgage Agent of Mortgage Alliance, I, Donna Wong will provide you with professional mortgage advice that works for YOU.  With access to over 60 lenders, when you call me, it’s like calling over 60 different banks, credit unions, and trust companies.

I also have access to the interest rates, banks don’t want you to know about. Mortgage Agents send lenders a lot of new business each month, they always offer the deepest discounts – which I will pass on to you. I am always available to meet at your convenience with NO COST* to you for my services. *OAC. Some conditions apply.

The choices you make could save you thousands of dollars and take years off your mortgage. I will take the time to understand your situation and your needs, then use my expertise and knowledge to help you make the right mortgage decision.  Together we will tailor a mortgage that will fit your financial needs.  Working with me you can expect constant communication from start to finish, mortgage terms that work best for you with the best possible interest rate.

Mortgage Options

Enjoy the equity in your home WITHOUT selling?  Yes. It IS possible to do so. It’s called a “Reverse Mortgage.” This is an option for those who are 55 years or older. That may need extra income for travelling, etc.

Thinking you can’t own your home, or rejected from the bank because you are self-employed and/or divorced?  Don’t worry, it’s my job to find that lender you need to acquire your next home.

Want to pay off your house in 10 years?  It is possible with the equity you have in your house.  Let’s meet.

I am part of a great team and have 100% confidence that I will find the mortgage to meet your needs.  Remember, my services are FREE and at NO COST to you!  It’s ONLY about YOU….I’ll be beside YOU all the way!

How to keep your well water safe. https://www.mykemptvillenow.com/29717/local-connections/how-to-keep-your-well-water-safe/ Tue, 22 Jan 2019 22:35:49 +0000 https://www.mykemptvillenow.com/?p=29717

How to keep your well water safe.

You probably already know that water generated by your well is pulled from groundwater that is created through the gathering of rainwater and melted snow that has passed through the natural filtering process of soil, sediments, and bedrock. But did you know that while nature’s filtering process is incredible, it is not infallible, and groundwater is not 100% pure water having picked up broken down minerals along its filtering journey.

Ground water is not regulated like the water supplied by the township and therefore, your water is exposed to the possibility of contamination from septic leeches, bugs, and other environmental exposures like pesticides.

So how do you know if your water is safe to drink, and what are some things we can all do to keep our water safe?

[caption id="attachment_29723" align="alignright" width="250"]Collapsed well pit. Collapsed well pit.[/caption]

Testing:

You cannot always see bacteria, parasites, or chemicals. Your water may look, taste and smell normal but could still be contaminated. Microorganisms and some chemicals found in the surface and groundwater supply can cause long-term health issues, even if you are not feeling sick today. Having your water tested is the only sure way to verify that it is safe to drink and that your water treatment system is working properly. Should your tests identify an issue, Priority Pump Service is here to help you resolve it. Remember, just because your neighbours well was tested and observed to be safe that does not mean that yours is safe too.

Keeping Your Well Maintained:

[caption id="attachment_29721" align="alignright" width="260"]Cleaning out the well pit and extending the well above grade. Cleaning out the well pit and extending the well above grade.[/caption]
Like anything else, maintenance improves the performance of your well. One of the simplest things you can do to protect your water source is ensure that your well is up to code. Some easy things you can do on your
own are: checking that the well is a minimum of 16 inches above ground, ensuring there is a proper cap on your well, and lastly, making sure the area around the well is kept clean and clear. This helps ensure that there is nothing around that can leak or seep into the well. Additionally you can extend the life of your pump system by making sure your pressure tank is in proper working order.

Treatment:

Testing can be unnerving, particularly, if the test comes back showing that your water is contaminated. Don’t worry – there are a myriad of treatment options available to you. Solutions are not a one size fits all, and Priority Pump Service can help you identify the one that is right for your circumstance. Some of these solutions can assist proactively and even improve the taste of your water.

Priority Pump Service is owned and operated by an independent licensed well technician. We offer 20+ years of experience dealing with a wide range of pump and water conditioning issues. We repair all makes and models along with electric motors, and provide well water trouble shooting services. We service all types of water wells, pumps and pressure systems from conventional to constant pressure. We also do well inspections and water testing for Real Estate, Home Sales, Home Purchasers or any other reason. All work is guaranteed.

7 Reasons Why Local Connections Is A Great Way To Reach Your Business Goals

Every business operates with the same basic principles. While you might differentiate in product or strategy, all businesses need to be constantly evolving, adapting, and growing to meet your customers’ needs. In everything you do, you want your business to reach your audience, to expand your clientele, and to grow your customer base. Sponsoring a Local Connections article on this website can help you do just that and here’s why:

1. Provides An In-depth Educational Opportunity

Your message can include many more details in comparison to a banner ad or a radio spot. Each of these options provides significant benefit to your advertising strategy, and Local Connections is a great complement to them. The article is where you can expand on the message of your ads, broaden your scope and dive into the details while creating a new link to your community. Without time or space constraints, this is your opportunity to fully educate your audience.

2. Establishes Trust With Your Audience

This format isn’t an overt advertisement. Instead it encourages a connection with your audience. While your business will be featured prominently, the content is not directly about you. Instead, it’s all about your audience. As such, the content is very benefits-rich. By focussing on the benefit to the reader and helping solve a problem they have, it builds trust between your business and the reader. In this way, when they’re in need of the type of service your business provides, they’ll be coming to you because trust is a powerful influencer. It’s also an indirect, subtle selling point that you can’t just advertise. Trust is something you have to create.

3. Enhances Digital Brand Awareness

Local Connections provides a platform for your business to showcase itself online. In an increasingly digital world it’s important to have a digital presence. From social media to websites to sponsored content, it keeps a business’ brand current and relevant. Your content on Local Connections will live online permanently under your brand. This is an opportunity that is different from all other forms of marketing. Because the cost of a digital article is one of the few options not based on duration, the value of your Local Connections article will continue to build over time as it is a permanent part of our website.

4. Supported With Radio Spots

Not only do you get a permanent branded article on our website, but you’ll also receive on-air spots to drive traffic to it. The radio spots keep your company’s brand fresh and top of mind while also getting listeners to go online to the article where they are again interacting with your brand. Best of all, you get to decide how much frequency you want for your radio spots, based on your budget.

5. Supported With Social Media Posts

In addition to the aforementioned Radio Spots, you will also get supplemental social media engagement from our stations so your brand will reach our entire online community as well. Each week for four weeks, you’ll receive one social media post driving traffic to your article. Taken collectively, the Local Connections article, radio spots, and social posts provide a comprehensive marketing package that reaches different audiences in different ways while consistently putting your brand in front of listeners and viewers.

6. Allows For A Visual Showcase

While radio is known as the “theatre of the mind,” physically putting your brand in front of our listeners’ eyes provides an entirely new and different opportunity to connect with them. A digital article can contain images, logos, videos, and more – all optional media assets that you can share. A balance of text and visuals allows your brand to not just tell its story, but to show it in a simple, concise, and attractive way that is engaging to your audience.

7. Provides Measurable Results

Using analytic tools, we’re able to see and track digital traffic. We can monitor how many visitors come to our site and how much time they spend on it, all of which translates into value for you. The time that is spent on our site proves that our audience is taking the time to read your article which means they are learning about you and your brand on Local Connections.

Local Connections is exactly that: your connection to your local community. If you’re ready to accomplish your business goals contact us today to get started on your Local Connections article. We’re excited to help you reach your audience and grow your clientele in a new and innovative way.

Help an International Student Fall in Love with Canada

Time and again, host families welcoming international students into their homes personally gain so much more than they ever expect.

  • When you welcome an international student into your life, you refresh your daily routine. Hosting students is an ideal way for every member of your family to slow down a little and develop a new appreciation for your home and community.
  • Not only do you have an opportunity to learn about other cultures; you develop a renewed outlook on your own culture as you share your life and experiences with the newest member of your extended family.
  • You develop an ongoing relationship with your student and their family that can continue to grow for years. These connections can be extremely rewarding.

Why Do International Students LOVE Canada So Much?

International students from all over the world come to Canada to study each year. And Eastern Ontario is a popular destination because international students are always looking for a truly authentic Canadian experience. Eve Campbell, Relationship Manager with the Canada Homestay Network (CHN), says one of the best parts of connecting local homestay host families with international students is watching the students fall in love with Canada. She says students have told her they are torn between the excitement of returning home – and wanting to stay!

Comments like this say so much about the incredible host families who share their time and lives with visiting international students. Homestay helps integrate students into the community and break the “tourist barrier” by offering more than just room and board. Students benefit most when they live with engaged, active families who will help them learn English and who include them in their discussions and activities.

How Can You Become a Host Family?

The Upper Canada District School Board has partnered with CHN to support homestay hosts in local communities. CHN is a family-run, non-profit society that, for nearly 25 years, has helped thousands of Canadian families welcome students from more than 70 countries. As a host, you get 24/7 support along with a generous allowance to offset expenses.

So open your home to an excited and enthusiastic international student -- and bring the world to your front door.
