Activists urging Leeds-Grenville MP to support election reform

Local activists say they want to see changes to our election system.

A group of volunteers from Fair Vote Canada has announced plans to present our region’s MP, Michael Barrett, with a petition urging him to support Motion M-86.

The motion, put forward by an MP from British Columbia last year, calls for the creation of a “National Citizens’ Assembly on Electoral Reform.”

Steve Gabell, a volunteer with the organization and the local Ontario Green Party President, says the current first-past-the-post (FPTP) electoral system is unfair and undemocratic.

“Justin Trudeau promised that the 2015 election would be the last election to be held under FPTP,” Gabell says. “It is time to hold him to that promise and to ensure that every vote truly counts. No party should be able to wield a majority in Parliament thanks to winning 40% of votes cast.”

The organization will be delivering the petition to Barrett’s office Friday at 4:00 PM. We’ve reached out to Barrett for comment.
