Local Ontario Greens, supporters, talk Greenbelt scandal at protest rally

Steve Gabell said Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Steve Clark should “have some honour and integrity” regarding the Greenbelt scandal.

Gabell, the Ontario Green Party President, spoke with Moose FM at a protest rally outside Clark’s office Thursday morning.

Gabell says Clark should apologize, resign as housing minister, and cooperate with any investigations and inquiries into what happened.

“We’re calling on Clark to resign, which he would have already done if he had any honour and integrity left,” Gabell explained, “and we’re calling on [Doug Ford} and Clark and their staff to cooperate fully with any criminal investigations into the Greenbelt scandal, and any investigation from the Integrity Commissioner into the actions by their staff.”

The protest was organized after a report from Ontario’s Auditor General claimed Clark’s Chief of Staff showed preferential treatment to some developers when deciding what land should be removed from the Greenbelt last year.

“This is an egregious abuse of the taxpayers’ money,” said Lorraine Rekmans, former President of the federal Green Party of Canada at the rally. “It’s an affront to democracy.”

When asked for comment earlier this week, Clark said he “fully supports in-principle” and plans to enact most of the recommendations from the Auditor General, except for the recommendation not to go forward with building on the land.
