New signs remind drivers to yield for volunteer firefighters

The North Grenville Fire Service (NGFS) is running a flashing green light awareness campaign. New signs are up throughout the community reminding drivers to yield for volunteer firefighters.

Fire Prevention Officer Shannon Armitage says there are 40 volunteer firefighters with flashing green lights in their personal vehicles to respond to fire and medical emergencies.

She says firefighters must follow the rules of the road, so yielding the right of way allows them to proceed faster when every second counts. Armitage says drivers should only pull over when it’s safe to do so.

She says between the signs and social media campaign, the NGFS is already seeing an increase in the number of vehicles that yield the right of way for flashing green lights.
