Local aspiring doctor heading to Africa

Mia Andrew dreams of becoming a doctor. The 19-year-old Kemptville resident is heading to Africa to get some hands-on experience in the medical field. Andrew is doing an internship at the Coast Provincial General Hospital in Mombasa, Kenya.

Andrew just finished her second year studying Biomedical Science at the University of Ottawa. She says you can only learn so much in a classroom.

Andrew will be shadowing physicians in a variety of wards during the internship, including surgery, pediatrics and obstetrics. The program is run through International Medical Aid.

She says the not-for-profit organization delivers education and healthcare in Africa and South America. Andrew says the program includes mobile clinic, to teach kids about proper hygiene.

She leaves June 23 for the 8-week internship. The total cost is around $7,000. Andrew set up a GoFundMe campaign to help cover some of the cost. Around $1,500 has been raised so far. To donate, click here.
