People First aims to bury the ‘R’ word

People First North Grenville wants everyone to stop using the ‘R’ word (retarded). The local group presented to council last night.

Deputy Mayor Jim McManaman attended a People First meeting earlier this month. He says many people around the globe are pledging to stop using the word, which has gained popularity in culture but is offensive to many. McManaman says the word is used as a slur and overused teenage adjective and it has to stop.

People First brought a symbolic letter ‘R’ and asked members of council, along with people in the audience, to sign it. The group plans on burying it.

Members took the opportunity to educate council about People First.

Group advisor Carole Pollock says People First is a self-advocacy organization committed to creating a supportive community for people with intellectual disabilities. She says the group reaches out to people who may need guidance and support.

People First meets once a month and is run entirely by its members.
