Community pulls through for burgled business

People in the community stepped up after a local coffee shop was robbed. Brewed Awakenings was broken into on Saturday morning, before employees showed up around 6:00am.

The culprit(s) smashed through the front door and made off with the cash register and money from Sweetheart Brunch ticket sales, totalling around $300. A social media post, explaining why the shop was closed Saturday, was met with an outpouring of support.

Owner Kika Smith says the community has been fantastic.

Rick Grahame, from Grahame’s Bakery, sent over doughnuts for the officers. A local carpenter, John Vingerhoeds, was on site boarding up the door within 30 minutes of the OPP wrapping up its investigation. The Trigon Insurance agent showed up in person to offer assistance.

Sigma Computer employees helped set-up the new cash register, even after the business closed for the day. Cathy Sheppard, of Sheppard & Associates, rallied the North Grenville Business Builders who showed up on Sunday in force to offer support.

Smith says sometimes you take the community for granted and then something happens to bring it back into perspective. She says we are so lucky to live in a community that is so supportive and generous.

Anyone with information about the break-in is asked to contact the Kemptville OPP Detachment by calling 613-258-3441.
