Local daycare filling 136 shoe boxes for women in shelters

Madison Montessori Academy is putting together Christmas gifts for women in shelters. The daycare is filling 136 shoe boxes with hygiene products and other items.

The boxes will be handed out to women at five shelters, including Naomi’s Family Resource Centre in Winchester.

The initiative was started by Karie Clouthier three years ago. She volunteers at the Shepherds of Good Hope in Ottawa.

Clouthier handed out 50 boxes the first year and 130 last year.

She says the goal is to put together 287 boxes this year. Clouthier says she reached out to April Hughes, owner of the daycare, and everyone took a box.

Each box contains shampoo, body wash, hats, mitts, a hair brush, toothpaste and $5 Tim Hortons cards.

Hughes says parents took the opportunity to talk to their kids about the importance of giving back and how fortunate they are.

If anyone would like to fill a box, contact Clouthier directly by emailing [email protected].
