Interval House wants to turn Leeds and Grenville purple

Leeds Grenville Interval House (LGIH) wants to turn the area purple this month to raise awareness for woman abuse.

This month is Woman Abuse Prevention Month in Ontario. LGIH will be raising their Shine the Light on Violence against Women flags to kick off a couple campaigns. They will be raising them at the Brockville Police Service on Parkdale Avenue at 11 on Monday morning. They will also be raising a flag behind Brockville City Hall, over the railway tunnel, at one Monday afternoon. The public is encouraged to come out for these two events.

Charlene Catchpole is the Executive Director of LGIH and says it is the only shelter in the county for women and their children who are escaping abuse. She explains that they are selling purple scarves to support the Wrapped in Courage campaign.

“The significance of that is to show women in our communities that we know that there’s violence in our communities, and that we support women who are living within violent situations to reach out for help and assistance and support when they need it.”

On November ninth the second annual Charity Rocks Concert will be happening at the Keystorm on Courthouse Avenue in Brockville. The doors open at 5:30 that evening and tickets are $10.

LGIH will be selling purple scarfs, neckties, LED light bulbs, mini strings of battery operated LED light bulbs, keychains and keyring flash lights. To purchase tickets for the concert or any of the other purple items contact Kimberley Wright from LGIH at [email protected] or 613-342-4724 extension 104. All of the money raised from LGIH events this month will be going to support the programming in the shelter and the community.

November 25th is when 16 Days of Action begins. Catchpole says there will be an action to show that violence is not OK and that the interval house is there to support women through the process. The action or challenge will be posted to LGIH’s social media.

Catchpole says they are currently working with about 350 families throughout Leeds and Grenvillle. For more information about LGIH visit their website here.
