Centennial ’67 Has Moved Into First Place With Ten Days Left To Donate

Community support has vaulted Centennial ’67 into first place in the Ontario Battery Recycling Challenge.

Following a plea from Principal Debra Schouten last week the school jumped from second to first over the weekend. According to Raw Materials, the company responsible for running the competition, it is estimated students at the Spencerville school have collected almost 18,000 batteries for recycling. Second place has around 16,500 but more of their batteries have been collected and totalled as official.

Schouten says the outpouring of support has been fantastic, adding that it proves what she already knew about their wonderful community. As added incentive the top three schools receive part of a prize pool, which is based on the number of batteries collected across the entire province. Ten per cent of the total will be donated to SickKids Foundation and the top three schools will split the rest.

Schouten says batteries can be dropped off until April 20th and if they want to stay in first they’re going to need donations right to the end. Details about what batteries will be accepted and where they can be dropped off are available here.
