The Ontario Government have announced a new Black youth mentoring program

Ontario is launching a mentorship program they’re hoping will help Black children and youth build confidence while developing skills for school and work.

Michael Coteau, the Minister Responsible for Anti-Racism and Minister of Children and Youth Services, announced the Together We Can program earlier this week in Toronto. The program will support as many as 25 locally developed mentorship initiatives in priority communities. Four communities, all in the Greater Toronto Area, are already developing programs as part of the initiative. The other 21 spots are available and community organizations are encouraged to apply.

The province says they plan to partner with community organizations to develop the Together We Can program so it responds to local needs. Some of the activities suggested include skills training, tutoring and arts-based activities. The program is part of the Ontario Black Youth Action Plan, a four-year, $47 million dollar commitment to improving the lives of Black children, youth and families across Ontario. The Ontario government says eliminating systemic racism while advancing racial equality is part of their plan to create jobs, grow the economy and help people in day to day life.
