Changes will be need to be made to some municipal by-laws

A number of changes to municipal by-laws and policies are coming courtesy the Modernizing Ontario’s Municipal Legislation Act.

The provincial act received royal assent on May 30th and requires a number of changes and additions to by-laws in municipalities across the province. Director of Corporate Services Cahl Pominville says that some by-laws will require more work than others to be in compliance with the act as sections are proclaimed by the province.

The act touches on a number of topics including an integrity commissioner for residents, codes of conduct, the municipal conflict of interest act, fiscal sustainability, municipal elections, and climate change.

Pominville stated at Tuesday’s North Grenville Committee of the Whole meeting that staff was just looking for the go-ahead from members of council to start looking at what needed to be amended..

Pominville was asked if there’s a timeline to implement the changes required by the act. He says no deadline has been set as of yet.

Pominville says the municipality has already tackled a number of incoming changes by passing by-laws over the last couple years. He says some of those by-laws will only require a review to confirm the municipality is in compliance with the act.
