Drummond Centre in Spencerville designated as emergency shelter

The Drummond Centre is getting closer to becoming a full service shelter in case of emergency.

The Spencerville Fair Board is reaching out to neighbouring communities to let them know of the emergency shelter designation. It made a presentation to members of North Grenville’s Council on Monday night.

Spencerville Agricultural Society President Shelley Stephenson says the board wants to make municipalities and its residents aware that not only can the building house people in the event of an emergency, it can also house pets and animals too.

Stephenson says that a lot of people won’t evacuate in the event of a disaster because pets aren’t always allowed in a shelter.

Stephenson says the board is hoping to take the next step by hooking up a generator to the building and has been making strides in getting funding for the project.

It also hopes to receive funding through the Ontario Trillium Foundation to help fund training for those volunteers that would help out at the shelter in the event of an emergency.
