Police: Interfering with election signs is a criminal offence and will be investigated when reported

Police say interfering with election signs is a criminal offence and will be investigated when reported.

OPP say they have received reports of election signs being removed, relocated, damaged, discarded, and stolen.

They are encouraging respectful participation in the democratic process and reminding the public that disagreements with candidates, policies, or campaign messaging should never result in damage to property or interference with election materials.

Election signs are the property of candidates and their campaigns. Tampering with or removing them without authorization may result in criminal or provincial charges, depending on the circumstances.

Election sign interference includes stealing election signs, removing them from authorized locations and damaging or vandalizing them.

Anyone who witnesses suspicious activity involving election signs is encouraged to contact police.
