There will soon be more places for people to call home in Kemptville.
The ground has been officially broken at the Reuben Crescent Housing Co-operative, which could feature up to 109 co-operative housing units made up of studio, one bedroom and two-bedroom apartments.
Co-operative housing is a non-profit community model where residents jointly manage their buildings and set monthly charges based on operating costs rather than private profit.
The $55.4 million dollar development is supported through funding from the municipal, provincial and federal governments, an investment of more than $3 million from New Market Funds, a non-profit real estate development company.
New Market Funds Managing Director Andy Broderick tells the Vista Radio Newsroom that it’s essential to offer a wide variety of homes in the community.
“I think it’s absolutely critical and we found this community particularly focused on trying to make sure that housing that’s accessible to all is available.”
Broderick adds that the plan is to have construction completed by September, 2028.
