North Grenville is putting a temporary pause on any new aggregate operations being built in the municipality.
North Grenville Mayor Nancy Peckford says they have put an interim control by-law in place on the quarry projects for the next year so that the municipality can engage external experts and their own staff on the best ways to bring them in while mitigating impacts.
She says it’s part of the development of a new official plan.
It comes at the same time that R.W. Tomlinson Ltd. is applying to build a pit in East Oxford where as much as one million tonnes of aggregate would be extracted annually.
Many residents have come forward to voice their opposition to that project over concerns including impact, environment and changing the landscape of the area prompting council to send a letter of opposition over it to the Ministry of Natural Resources.
North Grenville Mayor Nancy Peckford tells the Vista Radio newsroom that they wanted to make sure the ministry heard their thoughts.
“Really outline some of the concerns that had already been identified by staff as well as concerns that have been identified by residents in the community. We wanted to make sure that we covered off that base with the ministry.”
The objection letter says the municipality considers the proposition of a pit in East Oxford to be premature and in its current form, does not constitute good planning and is not in the public interest.
It says the pit should not be approved at this time.
