South Nation Conservation has issued a Flood Outlook Statement with warmer temperatures and rain in the forecast.
They say the spring melt could result in quickly rising river water levels and possible unsafe conditions.
The above average temperatures forecasted for the next week, along with the potential for 25 to 80 millimetres of rain, could lead to high water levels in creeks and rivers, fast flowing water and slippery or unstable banks.
Residents are advised to be extremely cautious when near rivers and waterbodies with any ice-covered bodies of water considered unsafe.
Parents are also encouraged to explain these dangers to their children.
You should make sure your sump pump is clear, in good working condition and that downspouts are clear with the outlet at least three meters from the dwelling.
