North Grenville Mayor says Ottawa needs to support new childcare spaces

North Grenville Mayor Nancy Peckford says childcare spaces in the area are at a premium, and current wait lists are unacceptably high.

In a post on Facebook, Peckford says they have been advocating for additional spaces for nearly two years.

She says through the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville, which oversees childcare for 13 communities in our area, they have met multiple provincial ministers to make their case.

Along with Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes MPP Steve Clark, Peckford says they have secured over 640 new spaces in the counties which is great but sadly it’s not enough, especially for high growth towns like North Grenville .

She says that’s why the federal government needs to step up for rural communities like ours.

This past Friday, Peckford says the counties held a professional development day in North Grenville with over 300 early childhood educators and providers in attendance.

Peckford says she was honoured to speak and share her own experience of accessing high quality childcare when her kids were younger.

She adds that she also published an op-ed in the Parliamentary Hill Times recently to appeal for more spaces in eastern Ontario.
