Municipality of North Grenville becomes “twin communities” with Ukrainian city of Sokal

Our community will now be partnering with some new neighbours on the other side of the world for projects like tourism and education initiatives.

At this week’s council meeting, Mayor Nancy Peckford and the rest of council met with a Ukrainian delegation and agreed to become “twin municipalities” with the city of Sokal.

Volodymyr Palagniuk, a Legislative Assistant at Brantford-Brant MP Larry Brock’s office who helped coordinate the meeting, thanked Mayor Peckford for her consideration.

“Even after five hundred days of a Russian war in Ukraine, you still have enthusiasm and energy to support Ukraine, and show your support with real action. On behalf of all Ukrainians in this room, I thank you.”

North Grenville is now the third city to sign a twin municipality agreement with a Ukrainian city since the war began last February, after Brantford and Sioux Lookout.

“To me, proceeding with a twinning agreement goes beyond just a simple document,” added Ukranian Canadian Congress National Outreach Director Marianna Savka. “It’s more of a bond of friendship and understanding and aspirations that comes between different cities.”

Peckford thanked the delegation for approaching council with the idea, and Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes MP Michael Barrett for helping coordinate.
