UCDSB considering changing bell times at all schools

Local high school students might have more time to sleep before school beginning in 2024.

The Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) is considering changing its bell times at all its elementary and secondary schools.

The idea has been in the works since October of 2022, and partly comes from teenagers’ need for sleep.

According to a presentation from local experts and staff members to the UCDSB’s Board of Trustees, many teenage students aren’t getting enough sleep each night, which affects their ability to pay attention in class and their attendance.

If the board moves forward with the motion as it’s currently written, elementary schools will move to an 8:00 AM start time, and secondary schools will adjust their start times between 9:00 and 9:30 AM.

If it’s accepted, the change is expected to be implemented by September of 2024. The Board of Trustees votes on the proposal at its next meeting.
