Police reminding drivers students are back in class

Slow down, stay alert and use extra caution in school zones.

That’s some of the advice OPP have for drivers as students head back to class this week with more hitting the books following the Labour Day long weekend.

Police say that will result in increased traffic volumes near schools, school bus stops, and pedestrian crossings.

They add that one of the most important responsibilities drivers share is ensuring the safety of children boarding and exiting school buses.

When approaching a school bus displaying flashing amber lights, and its stop arm out, drivers should be prepared to stop and wait until students have either got on or off safely and the lights and stop arm are off.

Police say a few extra seconds of patience and attention can help prevent a tragedy and ensure every child arrives safely at school and returns home at the end of the day.
