Walk to be held in memory of local young firefighter

A local woman is preparing to walk from Kemptville to Spencerville in memory of her son who was killed in a motorcycle accident in 2023.

Belinda Ouellette’s 19-year-old son Lucas Champagne was was in training to become an electrician and volunteered as a firefighter with the Spencerville Fire Department when he passed away on Aug. 28, 2023.

His birthday was Sept. 6 and, to mark it, Ouellette and Lucas’s best friend Fil will be walking that day along Highway 44 while also raising money that will be donated to the fire department.

Ouellette tells the Vista Radio Newsroom that Lucas loved being a firefighter.

“We we’re so proud of him because we said he’s 19-years-old and still pretty young, if you don’t get in you’ll try for next year. I was in at work and he called me (to tell me he was hired). I I was so happy, so proud.”

Ouellette adds that anyone living along Highway 44 is invited to say hello, give a wave, or cheer them on along the way.
