Local business owner recognized with the 2025 Bill Thake Memorial Award

A local business owner and community leader is being recognized with the 2025 Bill Thake Memorial Award for Economic, Development Leadership.

A media release from the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville says James Purcell established James Purcell Insurance Broker Ltd. in 1996 in downtown Spencerville.

It adds that over nearly three decades, his business has grown steadily while maintaining a strong focus on customer care and local engagement.

The release goes on to say that Purcell’s tireless work with the Spencerville Mill Foundation, the Spencerville and District Optimist Club, the Edwardsburgh Cardinal Fire Department and more reflect his commitment to supporting community resilience and economic growth opportunities.

Introduced in 2011, Bill Thake Award, also called the Warden’s Award, recognizes and celebrates a volunteer who has shown outstanding commitment and leadership resulting in the growth and vitality of the Leeds Grenville economy.

Thake, who died in 2013, was recognized as being the longest-serving mayor in Canada, serving as reeve/mayor of Westport for 44 years. He also served four terms as warden.

Purcell will be officially recognized during the Leeds Grenville Economic Development Summit, taking place on Friday, Nov. 21, at the North Grenville Municipal Centre in Kemptville.
