Update: MPP Clark calls closure of Invista plant “”devastating”

Update: 2:17 p.m. Tuesday

Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes MPP Steve Clark says the closure of the Invista plant is “devastating.”

In a statement Clark says “I’ve got family and friends who work at Invista, so I heard the news about the job losses right away. It’s devastating — and it’s a direct result of the ongoing trade war under the Trump administration. I’ve already reached out to our provincial government to push for support, and I’ll keep working with all levels of government as we learn more from Invista. Assisting those affected will remain a top priority.”

Approximately 100 people will be unemployed as Invista closes its plant in Maitland.

The company announced in a post on its website on Tuesday that it will be relocating its production to its Victoria, Texas site with the local plant to begin closing over the coming months.

The statement says the shutdown will be done in a safe, orderly, and compliant way.

It adds that Invista will ensure full compliance with all applicable legal and regulatory requirements throughout the transition.

“We want to recognize and thank the Maitland employees, contractors, and others who have contributed to INVISTA’s success over the years,” said Brook Vickery, INVISTA president and CEO. “This decision is not a reflection of their efforts, but rather a reality of today’s market environment.”

Invista manufactures chemical intermediates, polymers and fibres and is a subsidiary of Koch Industries.

The Maitland plant has been operating for over 70 years.
