Drive-By Giving Radiothon Raises Approximately $16,000 For Salvation Army

The local Salvation Army is basking in the community’s generosity following a highly successful Moose FM Drive-By Giving Radiothon.

Last week, the non-profit was taking donations for its annual event, which sees funds go to those less fortunate who need a little boost over the holiday season.

After tallying donations, they raised just over $16,000.

“Was it a long day? Yes, of course,” Moose FM’s Chris Walker said. “Was it a cold day? Actually, I think it was the coldest day we’ve had so far. Was it worth it? We were able to raise to $2,000 an hour for every hour we were outside. Of course it was worth it, we’d do it again in a heartbeat.”

The need this year was higher than ever due to COVID-19.

Co-Director Calvin Wong says the community pulled through in a big way for the Kemptville location.

“The need has really grown this year since COVID started and we are doing the best we can to compensate for that by raising as much money as we can to contribute towards providing food and necessities of life for people who really need it.” Wong said.

The Radiothon ran from 9 a.m to 6:00 p.m. last Thursday, with many community members stopping by to give what they could and sharing their stories of why they’re thankful for the Salvation Army.

The donation total fell just shy of the $16,618 that was raised for the organization last year.

Co-Director Erin Wong says it’s vital for them to be able to provide help to those who need it.

“The winter months are tough,” she said. “There are so many expenses that people have and there isn’t the same availability for employment with seasonal work that people have in the summer. So, definitely the winter months are hard for people and that’s what we are here for.”

The Wong’s both note what a trying year it’s been but they’re happy these funds will help bring some Christmas spirit to families in need.
