State of emergency declared in Leeds and Grenville

The United Counties of Leeds and Grenville is taking additional steps to prevent the spread of COVID-19. A county-wide state of emergency was declared yesterday.

Warden Pat Sayeau says the goal is to reinforce the importance of physical distancing.

“It is critically important that we do not let down our guard,” he noted. “My message is clear – stay home, self-isolate, avoid even family groups and stay safe.”

The declaration ensures that Leeds Grenville has the flexibility and is agile to respond to ongoing and new operational issues, according to a press release sent out by the counties.

Sayeau explained he has spoken with all mayors within the counties and no municipalities are in need of additional resources at this time, from each other or the province.

Leeds and Grenville residents are urged to maintain six-foot separation distances at all times, avoid all gatherings of groups larger than five and only travel if absolutely necessary.

Sayeau says the next few weeks are crucial and lives can be saved if everyone follows government directives.

All boat ramps and marinas are closed throughout the counties, in compliance with a provincial order, which means seasonal residents and visitors will have no access to the area’s lakes and summer cottages.
