Council recommends $1 raise for local lifeguards

The Kemptville Pool staff could see a wage increase this year. North Grenville Committee of the Whole recommended the 2019 part-time student wage grid last night, which includes a $1 hourly raise for lifeguards.

Human Resources Coordinator Christa Stewart says the municipality sought expertise and initiated a compensation review to ensure the organization is extremely competitive and appropriately positioned to attract and retain a talented workforce.

The original request for a wage increase was brought forward by Brett Scott three months ago. The lifeguard, who works at the Kemptville Pool seasonally, wanted a $1 hourly bump up for all pool employees. At the time, Scott said the reason is the cost of re-certification lifeguards have to get and maintain, which costs around $1,200.

Lifeguards currently make $14.42 per hour. The recommendation is for $15.47 per hour.

The new wage grid shows pool supervisors will be paid $16.34 and head lifeguards will make $15.86.

The final vote on the matter is set for May 21, during the regular council meeting.
