Cyclists, motorists must share the road: OPP

Grenville County OPP is reminding people that as the weather gets warmer, cyclists will be taking to the street. The OPP says cyclists must share the road with vehicles and vice versa.

Bicycles should always travel with traffic, stay as far right as possible and use hand signals to show change in direction.

The most important piece of safety equipment is a properly fitted helmet, according to the OPP. The law requires everyone under the age of 18 to wear a helmet.

The OPP says motorists also have a role to play in cycling safety. Drivers must leave a minimum of one-metre of distance when passing a cyclist. The fine for failing to do so is $110.

Officers will be visible with proactive patrols and enforcement to ensure all road users stay alert and safe.
