UCDSB responds to education changes

Education is about to change in Ontario. The Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) has responded to the provincial government’s plan to modernize classrooms and learning for students.

Key highlights of the announcement include a focus on e-learning, limiting cellphone use in classrooms and increased class sizes at the secondary level.

UCDSB Chair John McAllister the announcement has caught the board’s attention. He says the first impression is that there will be many changes forthcoming for UCDSB schools.

Starting in 2020-21, students will be required to take at least four e-learning courses to get an Ontario Secondary School Diploma.

Cellphone use will only be allowed during instructional time for educational purposes, as directed by the educator, for health and medical purposes and to support students with special education needs starting in the fall.

High school class sizes will be increasing from an average of 22 to 28. The government made the announcement Friday.
