The Ontario Government is Promoting Active and Engaged Seniors

The province has announced the Seniors Community Grant recipients.

Minister of Senior Affairs Dipika Damerla made the announcement yesterday in Ottawa, saying she is inspired by the dedication to keeping Ontario seniors active and engaged. None of the money is going to projects in Grenville but Mayfield Retirement Residence Director of Community Relations Lisa Temple says keeping seniors active is very important to their overall health.

Temple says we never want our elderly to be isolated or alone, so it’s very important to keep them active or engaged. According to her there are positive benefits spiritually, mentally and physically, including improved cognitive function and an increase in general happiness. The Alzheimer Society of Ontario says it isn’t a guarantee but challenging yourself, being socially active and physically active have all been shown to keep the brain healthy.

Temple says even little things like writing a letter or visiting with family can improve the overall well-being of seniors. She finished by pointing out that there are already many programs available in the community, including at the Mayfield where they encourage non-residents to stop by for some fun.

A list of some senior centres in the area can be found here.
