Centennial ’67 Public School Is Making A Push For First Place

A Spencerville school is asking for the community’s help becoming number one in a battery drive.

Centennial ’67 Principal Debra Schouten says the school decided to take part in the Ontario Schools Battery Recycling Challenge because they are trying to become an eco-school. Schouten says they can’t accept all batteries but they are looking for a long list. AA, AAA, C, D, 6V, 9V and all button cell type batteries are being recycled. The school is currently second place in the province and hoping they can reach number one with community support.

Batteries can be dropped off at the school but there are also locations throughout Grenville. Beach Home Hardware and Play it Star in Prescott and the Cardinal Home Hardware are some of the locations closer to the 401. The Spencerville Home Hardware, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Leeds Grenville and Community Living in Kemptville can be used by North Grenville.

Schouten says they could also have someone come pick batteries up, depending on the distance and size of donation. She adds that there what a great need there seems to be for this service, with several people saying they had been sitting on batteries for years.

Schouten finished by saying there are a lot of batteries out there and they don’t have them all yet. The competition closes on April 20th so there are still a few weeks left to donate and a full list of locations can be found here.
