Manotick Concrete Inc. Fined for August 2016 Incident That Injured Worker

The legal case against a concrete company in Manotick has finished.

In an Ottawa court last week Manotick Concrete Inc. entered a plea of guilty in response to an incident in August of 2016 where an employee received critical injuries. Justice of the Peace Herb Kreling handed down a $70,000 fine, which includes a 25 per-cent victim fine surcharge. The money from the surcharge goes into a provincial fund to help victims of crime.

During the 2016 incident a concrete pumper truck’s hydraulic legs sunk into the ground, moving the boom arm of the truck and injuring a worker who was pouring concrete. The Ministry of Labour inspector and engineer who investigated determined the primary factor that caused the truck to overturn was that the support area under the outrigger was too small. According to the province this put Manotick Concrete Inc. in violation of Occupational Health and Safety Act.
