The Champlain LHIN is making strides in the Healthy Foods program

Seven hospitals in the Champlain LHIN have reached Silver status in the Healthy Foods program.

All 20 hospitals in the network are taking part in the program but eight, including Kemptville District Hospital, have been awarded the second level. Program Manager Laurie Dojeiji says the Silver level offers more whole grains, fruits and vegetables across all meals while phasing out things like processed meat and sugary drinks.

Co-Lead of the Healthy Foods Leadership TaskForce Carolyn Brennan says hospitals have committed to increasing healthy options and while hospitals with franchises will take more time to reach the Silver level lots of progress has been made with other food providers. Champlain Local Health Integration Netword CEO Chantale LeClerc adds that hospitals in the region are acting as role models for health eating and improving overall health in rural communities.

Some of the other Champlain hospitals to achieve Silver status include Winchester District Memorial Hospital and Carleton Place & District Memorial Hospital.
