Health unit reminding people about being safe around bats

The Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit is reminding residents to be bat-wise.

The health unit says that while bats are beneficial, they can carry rabies and other diseases. Rabies can attack the central nervous system and is found in the saliva of an infected animal. It can be transmitted through a bite or direct contact with the saliva and eyes, nose, mouth or with an open wound or scratch.

The health unit says if you’re bitten by a bat you should wash the affected area thoroughly and seek medical attention immediately.

The health unit also reminds residents to bat proof their home.

There’s more information on bats and rabies available at the health unit’s website here.
