Boost to patients fighting cancer at Winchester hospital

Patients fighting cancer at Winchester District Memorial Hospital (WDMH) are getting a boost thanks to the community.

The Black Walnut Group is a support group for men that have been diagnosed with prostate cancer and their families. At a recent meeting the Eastern Ontario Prostate Cancer Awareness Committee donated 3000 dollars to WDMH to aid their cancer coach program. A cancer coach works with patients to determine their needs while helping to develop a plan to meet these goals. WDMH’s cancer coach is Michelle Renaud, no referral is required and the service is open to all cancer patients in the area.

Women battling cancer at WDMH will also receive support this week when local businesswoman Marilyne Kelly temporarily shuts down her business, Marilyne’s Wigs N Things. Marilyne is donating some of the store’s stock to help women going through chemotherapy, as well as other patients in need. Some of the items being donated to WDMH include; wigs, turbans, bangs for turbans, mastectomy prosthetics, surgical bras, bathing suits and wig care products. Kelly also works as a mastectomy prosthetic fitter and is an active volunteer with the hospital’s Look Good Feel Better sessions.
