Local students raise $1,000 for rescue centre in Kenya

North Grenville District High School held a Rock Paper Scissors tournament in support of Sarah’s HOPE. The fundraiser brought in close to $1,000.

Phil Stover, former teacher and founder of Sarah’s HOPE, says the money will go towards purchasing a shipping container for the rescue centre in Embu, Kenya. The goal is to re-establish a daily program for street kids, including basic education, music and sports.

Stover noted the cost of the container is approximately $3,500 and it will be converted into two or three rooms to serve the rescue centre.

He explained Gilbert Njeru, chairperson of Moving Mountains Kenya – Sarah’s HOPE partner on the ground – is climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to bring in funds for the container. It’s day three of the seven day climb. Njeru then plans to summit Mount Kenya in just 24 hours.

Stover says Sarah’s HOPE has been instrumental in rebuilding the Gatwe Primary School in Kenya. Fundraising for the project started in 2011 and work wrapped up earlier this year.

Stover noted there’s still minor upkeep costs at the school, including electrical upgrades in the classrooms.
