The Rideau Valley Conservation Authority (RVCA) is putting out a call for donations, corporate sponsorships and community partnerships to keep its tree planting program going. The move follows the cancellation of the 50 Million Trees program by the provincial government.
The RVCA says as Ontario residents mop up from record flooding and climate change promises more intense weather to come, we need to be adding tree programs not chopping them.
The RVCA plants over 200,000 seedlings each spring. The loss of the program means the organization can only plant 20,000 in future years.
Under the program, landowners pay around $0.15 per tree, or $120 per acre, to reforest their lands. The RVCA says without the provincial funding, tree planting will become unaffordable for landowners. Â
Donations, corporate sponsorships and community partnerships can save this cost-effective and successful tree planting program, according to the RVCA.
