Rideau Canal locks closed due to high water levels

Parks Canada announced Monday it is closing more than a dozen lockstations between Hog’s Back and Smiths Falls due to high water levels. Heavy rains and a late snow melt are being blamed. One boater said Parks Canada could do a better job of informing boaters of closures; he found out through Facebook. The move cuts off many of the preferred southern destinations for boaters in the city. The 182nd season of the Rideau Canal began May 16. No word on when the locks will reopen.
