Health Unit staff say syphilis cases rising locally

If you’re pregnant or planning to have a child, you should get tested for syphilis, according to the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit.

The organization is warning of a rise in local cases of the sexually transmitted infection.

“It can spread by direct contact with bacteria contained in syphilitic sores or rashes,” explains Communications Coordinator Susan Healey. “It can also be passed from an infected mother to her infant during pregnancy.”

It’s important for expecting mothers and people planning to get pregnant to get tested, Healey says, since early detection and treatment can prevent health problems.

Sexual health clinics are offered at seven different locations throughout Leeds, Grenville and Lanark if you need testing.

The organization has also partnered with GetaKit, an at-home testing program for HIV and other STIs.

You can find more details on the Health Unit website.
